"What is the value of theatre? Why should we support and encourage it? In this, it's important not to be waylaid by well-meaning but obscuring answers. Theatre does many things that aren't, strictly speaking, theatrical: strengthening community, improving school results, raising self-esteem, and contributing to the economy. These are genuine, important achievements — but they're shared by football, music, chess and martial arts.
What combination of virtues is unique to theatre? What does it do best? This is a huge question, but all the more reason to knuckle down and try to identify the vital virtues of one of our most impressive industries."
